The Mythological Beasts

The enduring power of myths, with their supernatural and human range of emotions, triumphs and tragedies, have been a source for creative expression for thousands of years - even before recorded history. Because they reflect the known and the unknowable, myths about gods and monsters interacting with animals and humans have sparked imaginations and inspired artists and artisans in every civilization. Virtually all that mankind has dreamed of or experienced is recorded in mythology.

Intrigued by the drama and even touches of humor in some of the legends, Mr. Axleroad uses the exacting medium of woodcuts, executed on a grand and exuberant scale, to portray his personal interpretation of timeless epics. The detail invested in each image and the lush, multi-layered colors reflect both his vision and his respect for his subjects. Each figure carries a psychological undercurrent that propels the action in the artist's image. The viewer perceives at once the confluence of divine and mortal elements, and responds both instinctively and intellectually to their relevance to our human condition and to our contemporary world.
